Adults Have Many Options Today to Get Straighter Teeth

My crooked teeth always bothered me, but I didn't want to wear typical metal braces for years as an adult. I thought that was my only option until I brought up the subject one day to my dentist. He told me that there were so many more options today that I should consider. I made an appointment with an orthodontist to discuss my options, and he said that I was a great candidate for invisible teeth aligners. He said that other people would not even notice them in my mouth, and that I likely only needed to wear them for a year. I was so happy I made that first appointment, because I now have straight teeth and am so happy with my smile. I created this blog to help other adults realize they have many discreet teeth-straightening options today. No should live with a smile they don't love!

Gum disease is a pretty common oral health issue among adults, but it still is not something you should take lightly. If it reaches the advanced stages, you are at risk of tooth loss, heart problems, strokes and other health problems. That is why you must practice good oral hygiene habits and avoid things that can damage your gum tissue. Here are five things that can hurt your gums:

Smoking

When most people think about the effects of smoking, lung cancer and heart disease are probably the first things that pop in their heads. However, cigarettes can affect many other parts of your body, including your gums. When you smoke tobacco, you can weaken your immune system and make your gums a lot more susceptible to infections.

Snapping Your Floss

Daily flossing is one of the most effective ways to prevent gum disease as long as you do it correctly. If you snap your floss between your teeth, you can actually irritate your delicate gum tissue. To avoid any issues, be extra gentle while flossing between your teeth.

Sugary Snacks

Donuts and muffins might be delicious, but you should try to limit your intake of sugary snacks as much as possible. The bacteria that causes gum disease loves sugar. If you do act upon a craving for something sweet, you should at least swish some water around in your mouth afterward.

Aggressive Brushing

Take it easy when you brush your teeth. Brushing with too much force will not just wear down the enamel of your teeth; it can also irritate your gum tissue. Always use a toothbrush with soft bristles and move it around in gentle, circular motions.

Hormonal Changes

If your body goes through hormonal changes, whether they are due to menopause or pregnancy, it can increase your risk of gum disease. If you have a condition that causes your hormones to fluctuate, it is even more important to see the dentist every six months. During every checkup, your dentist will check for signs of gum disease and recommend treatment options if he finds anything abnormal. For example, he may suggest root planing and scaling or flap surgery.

Never take your gums for granted. Brush and floss every day and look for changes in your gum tissue, such as puffiness, bleeding, or redness. If your gums look abnormal, you should make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible.
